Message from the Music Director

Aloha!

The joy of the season is in the air…and it’s only October!

I’m humbled and thrilled to be invited back to serve as Musical Director for The Honolulu Chorale once again as we prepare for our Winter Concerts in December. It‘s a privilege to be collaborating with so many enthusiastic, committed singers who come each week ready to learn and continually improve. We all come ready to have fun together as we gather each week at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church for our practice sessions.

The time-honored Christmas songs were thoughtfully curated to create a moving, memorable experience for those attending our concerts. The beautiful blend of soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices give me chicken skin in our practice sessions! Be sure to attend our concerts to make your season merry and bright!

Mahalo!

Musical Director

Be Transported This Holiday Season!

Close your eyes and imagine yourself in a little parish church in Baden, near Vienna, listening to the choir singing Ave Verum Corpus, the motet written in 1791 by Mozart for his friend Anton Stoll, a school teacher and choirmaster. Nearly 250 years later, we still honor this masterful work.

This and many other songs will transport you this season. Come and hear Leaning on the Everlasting Arms in a special arrangement by Keane Ishii; Jesu, bliebet meine Freude (Jesus, Joy of Man’s Desiring) by J.S. Bach in the original German; and the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah. And you can sing along to popular Christmas songs like Jingle Bells, Joy to the World, and learn Silent Night in German and Hawaiian.

Our first concert will be on Saturday, December 13, 2025, 4 PM at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu.

At our second concert on Saturday, December 20, 2025, 4 PM at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, we will be joined by guests, The Gakuenmae Choir from Nara Prefecture, Japan, and their director, Takashi Kawahara.

Admission is free for both concerts!

Our Winter Concerts will allow us to end the year on a high note, and while we are excited about the future, we enter our 60th year of service in 2026 with some trepidation. With ongoing changes in federal policies, there is less funding available to support organizations like The Honolulu Chorale.

We need everyone’s kōkua so that we can continue to be a vibrant community chorus and cover the costs for music license fees, rehearsals and concerts. Please consider making a tax-deductible gift to The Honolulu Chorale before the end of 2025 so that we can continue to bring joy to the community and help start the new year on a positive note.
